Honen (1133-1212) was a Buddhist monk of the late Heian and Kamakura periods. He preached the doctrine of "Senshu-nenbutsu," the doctrine that one can be saved by chanting "Namu amidabutsu" (Amitabha), and founded the Pure Land sect, one of Japan's Buddhist sects.
