There is a theory that the character for "鮎" was derived from the divination of victory in battle, and the fish often appears in mythology as a fish of good omen.
Ayu is called "昇り鮎(Ascending Ayu)" meaning "success in life" and "bravery".

Ayu has been a favorite fish in Japan since ancient times, and Empress Jingu enjoyed fishing for ayu and telling fortunes by fishing.

Ayu is a food offered to the gods in Japan and it with cubs has been used for "prosperity of offspring", and kelp rolls for "pleasure" and have been used as an auspicious gift for celebrations of marriage, pregnancy, and childbirth, as well as for company prosperity.
