Ganku is a painter of the mid to late Edo period. He was active in the production of the wall paintings of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, which was destroyed by the Great Fire of Tenmei, and in the 6th year of Bunka (1804-1818), he went to Kanazawa at the invitation of the lord of the Kaga Clan and painted the wall paintings in the Ninomaru Palace of Kanazawa Castle, thus decorating his hometown in brocade.

He was very good at painting tigers and became popular as "Ganku's Tiger".
Ganku's success in the Kyoto art world led to the training of many students, and after Okyo's death, he formed the Kishi school, which he himself was the founder of. The Kishi school was as powerful as the Maruyama-Shijo school in the Kyoto art world in the late Edo period.
